Seal 0906In Latin, Canis means… a dog! The canary islands are in fact named after a dog, not a bird! (In fact, not even a dog — but a type of seal (морской котик), called Sea Dogs in Latin, that used to live there).

The most common name for a gold fish is — jaws (челюсти!) 🙂

Capuccino is called so because of the white milk foam (пена) on top of it, that loooks like the cloaks of monks (монахи-капуцины).

As for the butterfly, some linguists really believe that its name is connected with butter: it either comes from the colour of some common butterflies (light-yellow), or from an old belief that butterfles steal butter! Others think, however, that a butterfly comes from the expression «flutter by» (порхать мимо вас). So choose the etymology you like! 🙂
